Conroy's Old Bar

The World's 1st Self Catering Pub  -  The Pub With No Beer

Just a quaint drive through the Irish countryside and you find yourself in the lovely village of Aglish nr.Borrisokane. On the edge of town is Conroy's Old Bar. It's the perfect place to stay if you are looking for total relaxation. And if you ever wanted to run your own little country pub, this is the perfect place to live out your dream for a few days ( patrons and beer not included). The kitchen has the original cash register and a Guinness refrigerator. Total enjoyment from the time you walk in this self catering BnB. Whether it be the friendly chickens residing in the fairy garden ( yes the brown one is a well know patron when the bar is open) , or the overwhelmingly beautiful night sky with the Milky Way blasting across from horizon to horizon, you will be filled with total comfort and relaxation. And might I say, the hosts are so friendly and helpful. They can also tell a fine story about the area and are full of information for the perfect day trips. We have had the best of times and will return without a doubt. It was everything and more than what we expected. Thank you for our experience in Ireland.

Conroys old bar is peace personified, if rest, relaxation and a little bit of quiet is what you need then this is the place for you. The difference here is that you are staying in what once was the village pub.Although the pub no longer serves alcohol you will be drunk on the quirkiness of your surroundings, the original bar is intact, the "ladies" snug is a bedroom, the old barrel store another, there is a sitting room with an open fire, an outdoor smoking area and chickens in the garden from which you can liberate fresh eggs.We were greeted on arrival by the really lovely Erron, a Grimsby Lass who has all the charm of Irish village landlady. She showed us around, gave us fresh eggs, turf for the fire and home made shortbread biscuits, you simply cannot fault Errons hospitality. We stayed for two nights and explored the area a bit, The first night we were too tired to go out so we dined in, ordering in a chipper from Luigis of Borrisokane and delicious it was too, the second night which was our thirtieth wedding anniversary we headed to the Derg Inn beside lough derg in Terryglass, what a choice of venue, the food was top class.

Overall this was a beautiful setting in a really quiet village to spend a few days. If you're looking for something that is just a bit different a bit out of the ordinary then Conroys is the place to go, tell Erron I sent ya.

Without doubt the best and most unique property i've stayed in. Spent hours just looking at the historic paraphernalia dotted all around the pub. Honestly can't say much about the local area as I really was more than content to stay at the bar..but I can tell you that if your too lazy to cook like myself then the take-away restaurants in Borrisokane will deliver to your door. Hosts were very professional and extremely accommodating. The turf fire makes it very cosy and the beds are great. Wouldn't change a thing...its guaranteed to exceed your expectations.

"Who goes to Aglish for their holidays" is what a friend asked before we left. Having been there my simple answer is "everyone should". A home away from home in a setting that's nothing like home! Prior to arriving I had been in touch with Erron on a number of occasions, she was great at responding and was accommodating of my changing circumstances. On arrival there was a friendly greeting, a turf fire (much needed given that we were arriving in "August in Ireland") and the most pleasant surprise of all . . . the place looked better in real life than it did in the pictures. The accommodation is spotlessly clean, something my wife was worried about as we were first time AirBnB'rs. You could eat your dinner off the bar (breakfast) counter - but we didn't try! We were two adults and two teenagers and there was plenty of living and sleeping space for all. Mobile phone coverage was poor (beyond a few "sweet spots") but this added to the charm of the place (it was truly a trip back in time where internet and email were forgotten about for a few days). Evenings were spent playing games, something we stopped doing years ago but really had a blast here in Aglish. We did use the tv once, but were glad of the real break from all gadgets and the "social" world. Thanks to Erron for making this a truly memorable break in a stunning house, in a charming country setting. We'll be back.

** The mobile phone coverage in Conroy's Old Bar can sometimes be poor, especially on the 3 Network or during bad weather.  Also, our internet service has been upgraded since Don's stay at Conroy's Old Bar **

Bref, parfait !

I cannot recommend this place enough. We had a wonderful stay. My 8 year old daughter said it was her favourite holiday ever. She loved playing barmaid, the chickens out the back and the fairy gardens and workshop next door.

Conroy's was exactly what we hoped it would be. Comfortable beds, especially the (American!) king-size bed in the barrel room. We wanted some place out of the way in central Ireland. Good day drives to the north and west as well as local exploration nearby. Erron is a great host. We appreciated the chickens and their fresh eggs, the rural setting and clothesline (dryer available but I preferred using the clothesline), delicious baked goods and friendly family. Staying at Conroy's definitely enhanced our week in the Lough Derg region.

Fantastic unique experience and exactly what we were looking for! Lovely secluded location away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life, yet with access to local towns and attractions just a short car journey away. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming hosts! Would definitely recommend to friends and would love to get the opportunity to visit again! Thank you, Frances

This was the absolute best. Erron couldn't have been more lovely and welcoming. We were running quite late and she was there waiting for us with the fire on. Where else can you actually stay in a pub and pretend like you are a true pub owner and bar tender. The rooms were spacious and everything was very clean and full of charm. I couldn't recommend this more for a wonderful country getaway. A definite stay if you are going to Ireland.

Amazing place. Wonderfully done bar setting. We had a great time drinking Guinness and Smithwicks, building a peat fire, and generally relaxing at Conroy's Old Bar. Erron was a joy to deal with and made everything very easy. We never had the need to call her, but she lives next door and gave us her cell in case we needed anything. Conroy's is in the middle of the middle of nowhere. Which was great! About an hour to Galway or Limerick, it isn't too far off of the grid. Beautiful surroundings made for a great stay in "authentic Ireland".

Amazing place! Warm, cozy, friendly, and one of the most unique places we've ever stayed in anywhere. A great little pub, and a warm little home. We are thinking of making a trip back just to stay there again!

I just can only say: thanks for everything, we will see each other again and you all will be part of my great memories from Ireland and how could Familie could be and will every have a part of my heart.

We had a wonderful time! You must stay here just to feel like you are a real Irish Pub Owner for a minute. Just amazing attention to detail and Erron was a great host and so accommodating. The surrounding areas were quite beautiful and we loved coming home to a peat fire and comfy couches and a pint or 2. It is a must for anyone...even Gramma enjoyed it! Thanks so much Erron and her adorable family, fairies and all!

Erron is a host that goes above and beyond what is needed to make all her guest feel welcomed and at home. My fiancé and I were on holiday from the states, filling the first half of you trip to Ireland with the more touristy sites. The second half was spent at Conroy's and was incredibly relaxing while still feeling adventurous. Make sure you maximize your time at Conroy's, live it up! Go to the Derg Inn and get the fish and chips in Terryglass. Also, make your way down to Ballina and get a pint at Goosers which sits right on the River Shannon.

Without a doubt the most magical place I've ever stayed. If I could have moved in I would. It was warm, cosy, SO CLEAN, amazing beds, great kitchen facilities and I could talk for days about how magical the atmosphere is of having your very own pub. There is a real fire, with unlimited stock of turf. It just makes the place even more homely and comfortable environment. The place was spotless clean, I had the best night's sleep ever in the bed, so comfortable. There really isn't much I could say that's negative about this place. My only advise is that you would definitely need a car, the nearest shops and supermarkets are about 10mins drive. But if you come stocked up with drinks, food etc... trust me, you'll be looking for reasons not to leave!!!!!
